Ford called this mixture the fuel of the future. In 1919, when Prohibition began, ethanol was banned because it was considered an alcoholic beverage. It could only be sold when mixed with petroleum.

Just a minor point – the Model T’s 20hp in line, L-head 4 engine was developed in 1907/1908, and was based off of the engine of Ford’s successful N/R/S models. The engine Ford developed in 1896 for his quadricycle was an air-cooled 2 cylinder horizontally-opposed layout that made 4 h.p. and ran exclusively on ethanol.
