As verbs the difference between expect and hope is that expect is to look for (mentally) to look forward to, as to something that is believed to be about to happen or come to have a previous apprehension of, whether of good or evil to look for with some confidence to anticipate — often followed by an infinitive, sometimes by a clause (with, or without, that) while hope is to want.
We dont use expect to refer to time passing when we are talking about something that we hope is going to happen: I look forward very much to hearing from you soon, and I wait anxiously for a positive answer. Not: and I expect .
3/14/2003 · Michael Swan** describes expect and hope: Expecting is mental rather than emotional. If I expect something to happen, I have a good reason to think it will in fact happen. Hoping is more emotional. If I hope for something to happen, I would like it to happen, but I do not know whether it will. Compare:, While expectation is the assumption that something is actually going to happen, false or not, hope is the wish for something to happen. Hope is flexible. It is alive. It responds to all situations instead of battling against the ones that appear to be opposite.
